Meet
the Teachers of SUMC Preschool!
Mrs. Drawert - Young 3's
Chris Drawert has been a
teacher at SUMC since 1995. She graduated from Rochester Vo-Tech as
a
Human Service Technician in Rochester, MN. She worked with
the mentally ill, geriatric and developmentally and physically
disabled adults. After moving to AZ, she began working with
preschoolers in 1980. She began a program from Central AZ College
and completed her Early Childhood Associate Certificate. She worked
at the MARC Center Preschool with
special needs children in Mesa.
After getting married and having two
children she became a stay at home mom. She has two boys who both
are SUMC alumni. Her husband, David works at his family business.
They have 4 dogs and lots of chickens who are all terribly spoiled.
After her youngest son started elementary school, she began working
at SUMC. She enjoys working in such an incredible, caring atmosphere
with adults who are dedicated to the best for their children and
others. She strives to make young children look forward to their
time in school by providing developmentally appropriate learning
experiences in her classroom. She is proud of SUMC and the work they
have accomplished. |
Mrs.
Harrison - 3's & 4's
Colleen Harrison has been
teaching at SUMC since 2004. Born and raised in Scottsdale, she
attended our preschool, and can speak first hand of its benefits.
Colleen attended college at Northern Arizona University (go Jacks!)
and earned a degree in Public Relations, with background in Early
Childhood Education. Before becoming a teacher, she was responsible
for organizing and implementing large events for large numbers of
adults; the leap to
working with children was therefore an easy one.
Colleen has a unique view of our school from one as student, parent
and now teacher. She can't imagine a better beginning for anyone.
Colleen married a great guy and has two kids (both SUMC alumni), all
of whom support her love of preschool and the crazy projects she
brings home. With their help, she has created dinosaurs, huge
birds, car washes, you name it. Her household also includes a few
crazy dogs, a nutty cat and a very patient rabbit. |
Mrs.
Malley - Kindergarten
Patty Malley has been a
teacher at SUMC since 2004. She is a graduate of
Northern Arizona
University; she has a bachelor's degree in Hotel and
Restaurant Management, and more recently, a
Masters degree in Education. She has an Arizona
elementary teacher certification.
Patty began her career in the corporate world in sales, service, and
management. After her youngest son was born, Patty was a fulltime
mom, while at the same time she pursued her dream of becoming a
teacher. While obtaining her masters degree in education, Patty
also worked part time in the SUMC daycare and was a
substitute teacher.
All three of Patty’s children are proud SUMC alumni. Patty has been
married to her husband, Craig (one of "Scottsdale's Finest") for
thirteen years. Craig has been a member of SUM Church since he was
a toddler. Their children, Kaitlyn, Trevor, and JT keep them active
and loving life! They enjoy
spending time with
family and friends, camping, and playing in their backyard
pool! |
Mrs.
Moss - 4's
Kate Moss has been a teacher
at SUMC since 2003. She is a California native, relocating to
Arizona in 1991. She knew she wanted to be a
Preschool Teacher after hearing Bev Bos speak during her
senior year in high school. She now believes Bev Bos to be one of
her mentors. She has an education background in Liberal Studies and
Early Childhood Development. Her previous work experience
includes time spent in the Hotel and Resort Industry in
Human Resources.
Kate discovered SUMC when she and her husband were looking for a
preschool for their oldest child. They had two more children that
also attended SUMC. As a parent, she has participated in nine
different classrooms over six years. She believed SUMC would be
great for her children; she also discovered it has made her a better
parent.
On
becoming a teacher at SUMC, she strives to provide a hands on
learning environment to support her belief that children learn by
doing. Self reliance skills and social emotional development are the
cornerstones of her classroom. Mix in some messy art projects,
letters of the week,
science experiments and cooking creations and everyone has a
great time.
Her hobbies include adventures with her husband Bill, three very
active children, and two crazy dogs either to the beach, or up to
Northern Arizona. They are also huge NASCAR fans! |
Mrs.
Velarde - 3's
A teacher at SUMC since 2002,
Marin Velarde believes in letting children be children, and helps
them explore their world through play. She has three main goals for
her class of three and four year olds; to learn how to resolve
conflicts, to discover how to be self reliant, and how to be a good
friend. Mastery of these skills is a life long process, and Marin’s
hope is that her students will leave her class with at least a
running start.
Marin has a degree in Information Technology, as well as extensive
background in
Early Childhood education. Her passion is
working with young children, and she is willing to try just
about anything to engage a child. Don’t be surprised if you walk
into her classroom and the children are riding tricycles through
paint or tossing rolls of toilet paper around. She also enjoys
cooking with her class; she and the class determine what would be
fun to make. All of these experiences lend themselves to learning
about science, math and start them down the road to reading.
Marin is almost a native of Arizona, and has been married to her
best friend since 1994. She has three children; Sawyer, Kellan, and
Rhys, who all got an awesome start to their education at SUMC. She
is also the auntie to many.
She nurses obsessions for
The Wiggles
and Def Leppard; in her free time, she enjoys hanging out with her
family, or simply doing nothing.
