Scottsdale United Methodist Cooperative Preschool and Kindergarten

Our Philosophy

The Scottsdale United Methodist Cooperative Preschool and Kindergarten is non-profit and non-denominational. Our philosophy is that children grow best when they’re given freedom to discover the world around them. We encourage creativity, personal responsibility, and strong self esteem. We also offer opportunities for parents to learn strategies for guiding their preschooler.

At our cooperative preschool children learn about the world around them through a variety of experiences such as art, science, music, books, blocks, role playing, cooking and field trips. Here, children are comfortable exploring new ideas because they are surrounded by caring teachers and parents .

Our teachers are highly qualified educationally and have spent years working with preschool children. They encourage each child’s individuality; praising his/her strengths and helping him/her conquer obstacles. Our teachers love to be around kids!

Raising a happy child who is eager to attend school is one of the greatest possible parenting and educational accomplishments. It is our goal for the children in our program to look forward to attending school every day.

Admission and Tuition

The best way to learn about our school is to tour the campus with Kate Strohmeyer, director of SUMC. Before a child can begin classes, the state of Arizona requires proof of current immunizations and SUMC requires that a parent complete a registration form. SUMC will accept children with special needs on a case-by-case basis.

Kindergarten

Our kindergarten program offers Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science, Creative Arts, Music, and Play.

It is our firm belief that the early years are crucial for learning and that the environment of these years affects the child’s total development and personality. Rich and varied classroom experiences allow children to interact with peers and build strong foundations for lifelong learning. This program helps children become self-reliant, independent thinkers and problem solvers. They learn to function both as individuals and as members of a group. They learn to respect themselves and the rights of others.

Learning With Your Child-

Why Choose a Cooperative Preschool?

At SUMC parents assist in their child’s classroom on a rotating basis, usually once or twice a month, and provide a snack for the children about once a month. This time in the classroom allows parents to better understand their child’s development both in and out of the school setting. Parents can also learn valuable teaching and guidance strategies through observing teacher/child interaction. Families also become part of our thriving school community.

SUMC parents help govern the school through their classroom representative to the advisory board, their participation on classroom committees, and their discussions with their child’s teacher and the director. SUMC works with parents to make the school experience enjoyable for the entire family.

SUMC also organizes a parent education program that addresses several areas of interest to parents of preschoolers and kindergartners.

On-campus childcare is available for parents who are assisting in their children’s classroom based upon availability. SUMDaycare can be reached at 480-941-3497.

Stay N’ Play

SUMC offers Stay N’ Play after class from 11:30-2 pm for an additional fee of $4.00 per hour. Stay N’ Play begins in September and continues through mid-May. Under teacher supervision children eat their lunch and enjoy free play outside and inside.

Emergency Medical Procedures

In the event of an injury, the child will be treated according to first aid/CPR guidelines. All staff members are CPR and first aid certified. A written report is completed and given to parents. In case of emergency treatment, 911 will be called and a parent is notified within 30 minutes.
