Health Corner 11/06 Prepare for the UnExpected Storms, equipment failures and other circumstances can cause sudden power outages. To prepare for unexpected emergency situations: Ø Retain a traditional (land line) telephone in case service to cordless or cell phone is temporarily lost or interrupted. Ø List important phone numbers by the phone, including police, fire, hospital, doctor, relatives and friends. Ø Maintain an up-to-date first aid kit that includes your family’s prescription medications Ø Place flashlights in hand locations, such as near telephones, along with fresh batteries. Avoid using candles for emergency lighting. Ø Store a supply of bottle water (a least one gallon per person) and a supply of food that won’t spoil and doesn’t need to be cooked; and make sure you have a manual can opener. Ø Keep coolers on hand to hold ice for lengthy outages. Ø Practice finding your home’s utility shut offs (electricity, gas and water) and learn how to turn each off (if tools are needed, keep them close by). Ø If you have an automatic garage door opening, check the instructions to learn how to open the door manually.
